The Untold Story of Sponsor: 2PM's Junho and the Time in Ethiopia

"Hi. This is 2PM Junho... I called because I would like to sponsor a child..."

Just like this, the relationship between sponsor Junho and World Vision started.

He called directly himself and said he always wanted to sponsor a child.

About 1 year later of quietly maintaining his sponsorship, there was another call.

"I...I would like to visit Felmeta living in Ethiopia. How can I go?"

The first vacation in 4 years, off to Africa to see the person he wants to see most in the world.

When getting in touch with ambassadors and celebrities, we usually contact the manager or agency first. But 2PM’s Junho, member of the nation's best idol group, called me first.

If you had to pick the busiest people in Korea, it would have to be idol singers. With the continuous overseas schedules, they barely have time to stay in the country. I thought, 'Do you really think it's possible to go? Would he be able to go when meeting a sponsored child is longer than a week?' this was how I was really thinking. However, during the next conversation with Junho, I found the answer opposite of my expectation.

"From January 16th, for a week, I've been given a vacation! I already talked with my manager hyung that I would be going to Africa. ^^"

Junho is always one step ahead.

There were 2 orientations before leaving for Ethiopia. First meeting. With his manager, we were supposed to meet at the World Vision Headquarters in Yeouido in early morning but he still came on time. Second meeting. The meeting was in the morning again, but he arrived 10 minutes earlier than us. Despite arriving earlier than the arranged time so we wouldn't be late in meeting a celebrity, I was so shocked when I saw Junho waiting for us.

We cautiously mentioned doing a new show from EBS called "Global Project 'Sharing'". Sponsor Junho worried that filming would disturb the citizens in Ethiopia. After a long period of thinking, he thought it might make at least one person watching the show decide to sponsor a child and decided to do the filming. Of course, on the condition that the staff try their best to not cause any disturbance.

When a celebrity goes to volunteer, many people look with prejudice. "They take business class when they are going to volunteer." "They should help a little more with the money they have for shopping." "Why do they take coordinators and makeup artist, are they going to take a photo shoot?" The theme of the EBS's show is blossoming hope along with music. Junho worked together with Shin Bongwon, JYP music engineer who he has always been close with. Sitting in Economic class, they were having an excited discussion about how when they arrive in Ethiopia, they would give lambs to the kids as presents and seeing this, I smiled without even thinking. The fans would have fainted seeing this beautiful moment. (ㅠㅠ)

Arrived at the Capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa.
World Vision mainly operates in the rural areas where help is harder to receive.
So arriving in Ethiopia was not really arriving.
This was only the beginning.

After travelling on unpaved roads and being covered in dust for 8 hours, we arrived at the work place.
There’s no hotels, no food court. There is nothing.
We will live in the World Vision staff's dormitory, eat local food in the kitchen at the work place…
I've been on many trips to Africa but this was one of the poorest areas.

Only seeing your presence in pictures, you really exist!

The story became long, but the purpose was Junho meeting Felmeta!
Thrilling unification moment with Sponsor Junho and Felmeta.

He planted an apple tree with Felmeta, gave the lamb gift that he had been taking about, and went to the school Felmeta goes to and gifted supplies to everyone.
(How thoughtful Sponsor Junho is that the other kids might become jealous!)
The whole time he worried the children might feel awkward or uncomfortable.
I could feel his sincerity from the way he shared his warmth and kindness while trying to be careful at the same time so the children do not get a negative perspective or feel harmed by a foreigner.

Suddenly he became friends with all the local children. If Junho runs, all the children follow him and run along with him. If Junho waves his hand, all the children wave their hands until he is out of sight.
Although they are unable to converse, his sincerity must have been felt!

You can't cry!

The day before leaving.
While meeting with the kids, we had time to discuss what we felt but I saw Junho's eyes becoming moist. He held his tears to continue showing his happier and brighter side but watching this made my own tears come out.

Idol group, Hallyu Star, 2PM… None of these titles came before Junho's name during the one week in Ethiopia. To the kids, he was the neighborhood brother, and to the World Vision staff, he wasn’t a celebrity but a regular, courteous, Korean boy in his youth.

His first vacation in 4 years, in addition to the busy and packed schedule, it’s likely you would want the week all to yourself to rest….
But Junho would still thank us, World Vision, for giving him this experience.

"I would like to see happy people turn around and to look at these kids, and share a little bit of that happiness."
Junho’s words linger in my heart.
I hope this trip of looking for true happiness will stay in Sponsor Junho’s memory forever.
